Mazhayimbe Irrigation Project

A 4 hectares irrigation scheme has been established with land cleared, fenced, and gardens pegged for families. One main channel and two lateral channels are already constructed, with two more underway. Each family has access to four irrigated gardens supported by the completed channels.

Planting of green mealies began on 1 September 2025 under AGRITEX guidance.

About Pro Africa Development

OUR BACKGROUND

Pro Africa Development is a local NGO registered as a Trust in August 2000 and in 2019 as a PVO with the aim to assist communities in Zimbabwe in prioritizing their needs in order to come up with proposals for economically viable projects and to source funding for the same.

Due to the devastating droughts of 1982, 1985 and 1992 which wiped out livestock and caused widespread food and water shortages in Matabeleland South Province of Zimbabwe, the basic needs of the rural population became compromised.

In response to the misfortunes of the rural population, a number of Non Governmental organizations, Government of Zimbabwe through its various ministries and UNDP came together and formed a consortium which was known as the β€œGive A Dam Campaign".

This consortium, the first of its kind in Zimbabwe was tasked to tackle the root cause of Matabeleland South’s perennial problems of droughts, food and water shortages. From 1995 to 2001, 47 dams had been constructed and completed with the full participation of the benefiting local communities.

This approach was to prove to be sustainable, as the communities became the owners of the dams and irrigation schemes, thus becoming responsible for the maintenance of the dams through their elected committees.

OUR LEGACY

Despite the wonderful successes in dam construction, irrigation development did not take off fast enough, as evidenced by the establishment of only 13 irrigation schemes by 2001, thus not addressing the food deficit in the region. Pro Africa Development Trust, established in August, 2000, made a deliberate policy to source funding for the establishment of gravity fed irrigation schemes below the completed dams.

Flowing from the operational scope of its predecessor, Pro Africa on the main operates in the rural districts of Matabeleland South and North Provinces, identified for years as the grinding epicenter of drought- induced food insecurity and poverty.

Over the years, Pro Africa has developed growing capacity in effective water infrastructure development and community based strategies for rural sustainable Development. It is that elusive ideal of proactive, capacitated and empowered rural communities that drives the vision of the organisation.

OUR COMMITMENTS AND POLICIES

We are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all our operations. Our policies are designed to promote inclusivity, sustainability, and community empowerment.

We actively seek partnerships and collaborations that align with our mission and values, fostering a collective impact in the communities we serve.

Our Projects

CURRENT PROJECT

Mazhayimbe Irrigation Scheme

After the completion of Mazhayimbe Dam in 2023, Pro Africa Development initiated the Mazhayimbe Irrigation Scheme in April 2025 to enhance food security and livelihoods.

A 4-hectare site was cleared, fenced, and connected to the dam through a 700-metre pipeline, supported by the construction of a main canal. Two lateral canals have been completed, with garden beds allocated to farmers under the guidance of AGRITEX, while construction of the remaining two laterals is ongoing.

On 1 September 2025, farmers planted maize as the scheme's first crop, marking the beginning of sustained agricultural production from the newly established irrigation system.

In addition, a greenhouse seedling centre was constructed to support continuous crop production and provide farmers with high-quality planting materials.
